Short Shots The key
to successful jig fishing is often having the ability to know when you
actually had a strike. Many strikes will be so light that you will not
even detect them. If you pick your jig up off the bottom, and you seem
to feel a little extra weight, set the hook. There is no other way to
learn what this feels like other than experiencing it for yourself. So,
stick with it until you have developed the “feel”. The first
mate turns to the skipper and asks, “Do you think we’ll catch any
fish today?” The skipper replies, “Cod willing.”
Why are
you IN a movie, but you’re ON TV? It’s
hard to make a comeback when you haven’t been anywhere. Why are
they called “stands” when they’re for sitting? You’re
just as likely to die by falling out of bed than you are to get struck
by lightning; each is a one in 2,000,000 chance. You have a one in
3,000,000 chance of being killed by a snake. The blue
whale weighs as much as 30 elephants, and is as long as three Greyhound
buses. Cutouts
of a moon and a star were used in colonial times on outhouse doors to
designate the gender of the intended user. Originally, the moon cutout
was for women and the star was for the men. But men’s outhouses were
usually such a mess that men preferred using the women’s outhouses.
So, eventually the use of stars was phased out. A cricket
an inch long has a chirp that is audible for nearly a mile. If you
find yourself in a hole, stop digging. In 1998,
excise taxes applied to hunting, fishing and recreational shooting
equipment and motorboat fuels provided more than $426 million to states
for fish stocking, wildlife restoration and research, aquatic resource
education, hunter education and other activities. Is a
sleeping bull a bulldozer? Pine,
spruce or other evergreen wood should never be used in barbecues. These
woods, when burning or smoking, can add harmful tar and resins to the
food. Only hardwoods should be used for smoking and grilling, such as
oak, pecan, hickory, maple, cherry, alder, apple, or mesquite, depending
on the type of meat being cooked. Dogs that live
with smokers have a 60% greater lung cancer risk than those living with
nonsmokers. Freshen
the air in your car. Place a sheet of Bounce under the front seat.
Approximately 13 million households in the U.S. own freshwater fish and
0.7 million own saltwater fish. Swedish
immigrants in Delaware built the first log cabins in North America in
1683. Gardenias
and orange blossoms both smell terrific, but when placed together in the
same bouquet, they will neutralize each other’s odor and there will be
no smell at all. There are
more different kinds of insects in existence today than the total of all
kinds of other animals put together. Anglers spend an average of 16 days fishing and take an average of 13 fishing trips annually. |
